Before going to start to learn about ' Parts of Speech ' . Look at the following
sentences attentively and give attention to each bold words .
(i) We live in Japan.
(ii) Lucy is a good girl . She goes to school everyday .
(iii) Max is a sincere worker .
(iv) The sun rises in the east .
(v) He left the place quickly.
(vi) He put the book on the table .
(vii) Lucy and Max did this .
(viii) Alas ! the poor man is died .
In the sentences above , each of the bold words is doing one work or the other .
These are called Parts of Speech . In English , words are generally divided into
eight classes of or Parts of Speech according to their nature and function in the
sentence. These are given in the following :
(i) Noun
(ii) Pronoun
(iii) Adjective
(iv) Verb
(v) Adverb
(vi) Preposition
(vii) Conjunction
(viii) Interjection .
(i) Noun : A noun is the name of person , place or thing .
Examples : Lucy , Japan , India , Milk etc.
(ii) Pronoun : A pronoun is a word used instead of a Noun .
Examples : He , She , It , Its etc.
(iii) Adjective : An Adjective is a word which qualifies a Noun and adds something
to its meaning .
Examples : Honest , Intelligent , Sincere etc.
(iv) Verb : A Verb is a word used for saying something about a person , place or
thing.
Examples : Move , is , Play ,Sing etc.
(v) Adverb : A Adverb is word used which modifies a Verb , an Adjective or
another Adverb .
Examples : Slowly , Very , Quickly etc .
(vi) Preposition : A Preposition is a word used with a Noun or Pronoun to show its
relation to some other words in the sentence.
Examples : On , Behind , Of , Up etc .
(vii) Conjunction : A conjunction is a word used to join together words , phrases ,
clauses or sentences .
Examples : And , But , While , Or etc.
(viii) Interjection : An Interjection is a word of exclamation expressing a sudden
emotion or feeling .
Examples : Hurrah ! , Alas ! , Hark ! , Oh! , etc .
