In the section of the Parts of Speech , we have learnt a little about Noun . You
have also got the short definition there . Here we are going to learn its kinds with
various examples . So , first check all the following sentences .
(i) Akbar was a great emperor .
(ii) India is our country .
(iii) The moon shines at night .
(iv) Forgiveness is a noble virtue .
(v) Milk is white .
(vi) The army is marching .
In the above sentences , the words in bold are all of persons , places or things .
These are called Nouns .
So , a Noun is the name of a person , place or thing .
There are five kinds of Noun :
(i) Proper Noun .
(ii) Common Noun or Class Noun.
(iii) Collective Noun .
(iv) Abstract Noun .
(v) Material Noun .
In Details :
(i) Proper Noun : It is the name given to some particular person , thing or place .
Examples : Ram , Max , Sun , Delhi , Japan etc.
(ii) Common Noun or Class Noun : It is the name given in common to every
person or a thing of the same kind . It is not a name of any particular person or
thing or place .
Examples : Boy , Girl , teacher etc .
(iii) Collective Noun : It is the name of a collection of persons and things treated
and spoken together as a whole .
Examples : Audience , Class , Committee , Crowd etc.
(iv) Abstract Noun : It is the name of quality , idea , concept or state .
Example : Beauty , Youth , Honesty , Death etc .
(v) Material Noun : It is the name of Matter such as gold , coal , wheat , tea etc .
Again there are two kinds of noun on the basis of Counting :
(i) Countable Noun : The nouns which can be counted are called Countable
Nouns .
Examples : Boy , Man , Cow , Teacher etc .
(ii) Uncountable Noun : The nouns which cannot be counted are called
Uncountable Nouns .
Examples : Water , Milk , Honesty , sugar etc .
