In the section of Parts of Speech , we have learnt briefly about Pronoun . Before
going to start about Pronoun , look at the examples given in the following :
(i) Max said that he would come .
(ii) Lucy is ill , she will not sing today .
(iii) The dog bit the boy with its sharp teeth .
The bold words in the above sentences stand for certain nouns mentioned earlier in
the sentence . As for example , in the first sentence 'he' stands for 'Max' . These
are Pronouns .
So , A Pronoun is a word used instead of a Noun .
There are eight types of Pronoun :
(i) Personal Pronoun.
(ii) Demonstrative Pronoun .
(iii) Relative Pronoun .
(iv) Interrogative Pronoun .
(v) Indefinite Pronoun .
(vi) Reflexive Pronoun .
(vii) Distributive Pronoun .
(viii) Reciprocal Pronoun .
In details :
(i) Personal Pronoun : The words used in place of nouns referring to persons .
Examples : I , We , You , She , It , they etc .
(ii) Demonstrative Pronoun : The words used for nouns to point out object .
Examples : This , That , these , those etc.
(iii) Relative Pronoun : The words used for nouns to express functions relating to '
'who' , 'which' , that , whose , whom etc .
Examples : Who , which , whose , That etc .
(iv) Interrogative Pronoun : The words used for nouns to ask questions .
Examples : Who , Whom, Whose , What etc .
(v) Indefinite Pronoun : The words used for nouns in vague and general meaning .
Examples : Everybody , Nobody , Somebody , All , Much , Several , Each etc.
(vi) Reflexive Pronoun : The words used as forms of Personal pronouns for
emphasis .
Examples : Myself , Ourselves , Himself , Yourself etc .
(vii) Distributive Pronoun : The words that used for individuals and objects referring
to them as one at a time.
Examples : Either , Neither , Each , Every , None , Anyone etc.
(viii) Reciprocal Pronoun : The words used to point out mutual relationship .
Examples : Each other , One another etc.
